Crewe Alexandra vs Swindon Town: Match Preview

It is the first round of the FA Cup this weekend, Swindon Town start their 2021/22 FA Cup journey with an away trip to league one bottom side Crewe Alexandra.

Another impressive away performance from Swindon Town last weekend against Oldham Athletic. I am so pleased for striker Tyreece Simpson, he has coped a lot of unfair criticism this season to date on social media for his performances leading the line for Swindon this season. He netted twice in a 3-1 away and took his tally to 6 goals this season in 15 league appearances. Just remember he is 19 years old and turn 20 in February and that this is his first loan out from Ipswich to league football.

The away performances this season for Swindon Town have been magnificent in all competitions, 9 games unbeaten to start the season is brilliant from everybody. Eight games in the league on which Swindon top the league two table on away form with six wins out of eight and two draws. The one win in the Football league trophy came away at Plymouth Argyle who are second in the league one table just one point behind league leaders Wigan Athletic.

In the back of my mind, with a heavy schedule in the next week I wonder if Ben Garner will rotate. Swindon Town do have three games in 7 days in three different competitions. The league game next week against Crawley will be missing key individuals as once again, important players from the Swindon squad have been called up to international duty. Jonny Williams, Jojo Wollacott and Anthony Grant have been called up to represent Wales, Ghana and Jamacia in the up-and-coming World Cup Qualifiers. Both Alex Gilbert and Kaine Kesler-Hayden have not been called up by ROI and England, but the latter is on standby. There is also a game in the Football league trophy in midweek where Swindon Town take on Newport County at home where Swindon have already advanced through from the group stage. I would expect a bit of rotation with key players missing out due to international commitments.

It was confirmed today in Ben Garner pre-match press conference held on Friday morning, that on loan Huddersfield defender Romoney Critchlow will miss tomorrow trip to Crewe as he picked up an ankle injury in the 3-1 win over Oldham Athletic. Harry Mckirdy can play tomorrow as his suspension for picking up five yellow cards only counts in the league. All loan players have been made available for this FA Cup tie.

Predicted line up vs Crewe

3-5-1-1

Wollacott, Conroy, Baudry, Odimayo, Kesler-Hayden, Reed, Gladwin, Iandolo, Payne, Mckirdy, Simpson.

Crewe Alexandra have had a horrible start to the 2021/22 season, with just over a third of the games gone in the season. Crewe Alexandra find themselves rock bottom after 16 games with just 9 points on the board. One win in the league all season and they are six points from safety.

Crewe did go the first six games in League one with out a win, started the season with a 1-1 home draw against League two champions Cheltenham town. But David Artell side did lose the next four league games in a row, a run which was ended 1-1 draw away at Shrewsbury. Then a week later a first win of the season which was a 2-0 home win against Burton Albion.

Since the Burton Albion home win on September 18th, Crewe Alexandra have hit a rocky patch with an 8-game winless run including four draws and four defeats. A run of four defeats in a row on which three were heavy defeats to Fleetwood Town (3-0), Sunderland (0-4) and Mk Dons (1-4) that was ended in midweek with a 1-1 draw with fellow league one strugglers Doncaster Rovers.
