Both teams are coming into this game on Tuesday going through a rough patch, both teams have lost games on the spin and who will be the team to break this losing streak on Tuesday night. Swindon are going through the same patch of bad form which hit them directly a year ago. The club was struggling with injuries and suspensions put out a scratch side and lost 3-1 to Crewe Alexandra. Just a few days later, a last-minute winner from Eoin Doyle against Stevenage happened and the fortunes were turned. Can the same happen again this time
On Saturday it was a 2-0 home defeat to Sunderland which made 3 defeats in a row in the league. 4 in all competitions and 7 defeats in 9 league games this season. Its starting to be a worrying start to the season if you are a Swindon fan. Every defeat I have seen this season is following the same pattern, it was exposed again on Saturday against Sunderland. Momentary lapses of concentration and teams in a higher division are on the case to punish you. Swindon contained Sunderland for thirty plus minutes and defended well, when a cross in from the left found an unmarked Charlie Wyke who had the easiest chance to convert from close range. No defenders in sight. The second goal was a penalty which Jonathan Grounds did not have to make the challenge, but you do have to feel sorry for him as Chris Maguire used all his experience and won the penalty. Just moments before he saw Jack Payne denied a penalty, which if given could have changed the complexity of the game.
Richie Wellens had his pre match press conference today and confirmed that he has had four offers from clubs since he has been here and its wrong from me to take my attention away from Swindon. The most important thing for me is Swindon Town football club. For days there were rumours linking him with the vacant Salford city job after his odds were slashed, I hope and that puts the rumour of that away. Wellens also confirmed that Rob Hunt will not be available for the game as he had an Epidural. After the few weeks that Richie Wellens has had with referees, he came out with this on referees, I am losing the will to live in terms of referees. I watched the next day when Pickford brought down Van Dijk and they still did not give a penalty despite VAR. These people are inept. You will not hear me talk about referees for the foreseeable future.
I think a few changes will be made for this game tomorrow night, I expect Richie Wellens to keep with the 4-2-3-1 and change the personal a little. Some players have been off colour recently and Wellens pointed that out in press conference by saying the experience players to step up a little more.
My predicted XI
Kovar, Caddis, Odimayo, Grounds, Donohue, Grant, M. Smith, Stephens, Payne, J. Smith, Hope.
I think Hallam Hope will be given more minutes and adds a bit more of a physical outlet up front. Then with 25 minutes left to go, Tyler Smith can be brought on to get in behind the Northampton defence with his pace.
After winning promotion with that emphatic win over Exeter City in the play off final at Wembley with no fans. Northampton Town have found it tough in league one this season. 4 points from 6 games and sitting in the relegation after a start which had some promise.
An opening day 2-2 draw at home to AFC Wimbledon was followed up with an away win over at Shrewsbury town. Mark Marshall and Sam Hoskins with the goals for Northampton Town in front of 1,000 fans. This was one of the games that was on the pilot scheme. But since that win away at Shrewsbury its been rough sailing for the Cobblers. 4 defeats in a row have followed with only goal scored. Defeats at home to Hull City, away at Bristol Rovers, home to Peterborough and at the weekend away at Plymouth Argyle, has seen Northampton drop from 7th to 22nd. Keith Curle has stuck with his tried and test 3-5-2/3-4-3 setup that has got this side to where they are now. They lost two valuable players in the summer in Charlie Goode who went to Brentford FC in the championship for an undisclosed fee. Goode joined permanently in January 2019 after a successful loan spell from Scunthorpe. He was also their captain and leader, an influential player on the pitch. Jordan Turnbull who Swindon fans know well after his two spells at the club left to join Salford City.
Both teams are going through bad patches of form now and will be looking to apply a band-aid to the wound. For me personally I would take a draw and hopefully a clean sheet going into a local derby game at the weekend. As we have seen this season, literally anyone can beat anyone in this league.
