Swindon Town vs Carlise United: Match Preview

Swindon Town will be looking for back-to-back wins in the opening two rounds of the league two campaign as they take on Carlisle United at the County Ground on Saturday afternoon.

It ended in disappointment for Swindon Town in the EFL cup on Tuesday evening away at Cambridge United. Its nothing to be scoffed at, taking a team who are higher in the league to lose on penalties. This team has been assembled in just a couple of weeks and by the sounds of it on the radio and by judging by fans reactions on social medial the team were playing good easy on the eye football.

Back to league action and back to the County Ground and it is déjà vu all over again, back in the 2019/20 season, Swindon Town kicked off that campaign with an away win at Scunthorpe United and a home win the following Saturday against Carlisle United. That game ended 3-2 thriller going the way of the robins, will we see a similar result. Time will tell at just before 5pm on Saturday afternoon.

Two new signings were introduced in the week and the latter signing came out of the blue and turned social media into a frenzy. Ricky Aguiar signed on a free transfer from Isthmian Premier League side Worthing FC. Tonight, it was announced that Welsh international Jonny Williams signed on a free transfer from Cardiff City. That is a statement signing from Swindon Town, both Ben Chorley and Ben Garner have done brilliantly in the transfer window to date. The squad is building up nicely.

Predicted XI vs Carlisle Untied 4-2-3-1

Wollacott, Kesler-Hayden, Conroy, Odimayo, Hunt, Reed, Grant, Payne, Gladwin, McKirdy, Simpson

Carlisle United are the visitors to the County Ground on Saturday afternoon. Last season in League two they finished in 10th place with 66 points from 46 games. Ended the last campaign with one defeat in the final 5 games. That was a 1-0 away defeat at Bolton, yeah you guessed it Eoin Doyle was the goal scorer. 3 draws and 1 win would follow in the final 4 games of last season, the sole win was a 3-2 away win at Leyton Orient.

This season, Carlisle United started the league two campaign with a 0-0 draw at home to Colchester United. On Tuesday night they were knocked out of the EFL Cup at the first round going down 1-0 away to Sheffield United. Rhian Brewster with the winner for the Blades.

Chris Beech is the Carlisle Manager and has been in the job since November 2019. Beech replaced Steven Pressley who was sacked after just 10 months in charge. Chris Beech like to play with a 4-3-3, but has switched to a 4-2-3-1, 4-4-2 diamond and to a back 3 playing 3-4-3 and 3-5-2. His record for Carlisle United in League 2 is very steady. 23 Wins from 65 games with 21 losses and 21 defeats. 90 points at a points per game record of 1.38.

First home game of the season and after last week away win at Scunthorpe, confidence Is high in the STFC camp. This will be the first game back at the CG with fans in full attendance since March of 2020. I feel a lot of fellow STFC fans will be looking forward to tomorrow with the buzz of the new regime and started strongly in the current campaign. Let’s hope the players can reciprocate and give the loyal STFC fanbase something to cheer about.
