Walsall vs Swindon Town: Match Preview

Nervous, anxious, excited, all the above. Swindon travel to Walsall for the final league game of the season backed by over 3,500 away supporters with a slim outside chance of automatic promotion. Only if results miraculously go in our favour, us Swindon fans can dream.

Swindon Town sneaked into the play-off picture in the final stages of last weekend home win over Barrow AFC. The club must do it the hard way on the pitch. Honestly in all my time supporting Swindon it is never done easily. The game was meandering to a 1-0 home win. Barrow equalised late on in the second half, for Louis Reed to pop and score a late winner. Back-to-back 2-1 home win. It was just a relief to hear the full-time whistle after the win last weekend, the last two home games have been nervy and filled with tension. Swindon were sixth at one point as Bristol Rovers were dropping points away at Rochdale. The away side came back and won an epic game 4-3, which saw them go to fourth and Swindon drop back to seventh. Monday bank holiday results went in Swindon favour as both Mansfield and Port Vale dropped points. Mansfield drew 2-2 away at Salford and Port Vale lost 2-1 at home to Newport County.

Ben Garner in his press match conference confirmed this morning that he has no injury worries going into tomorrow’s game away at Walsall. He confirmed that JoJo Wollacott shoulder injury is progressing well and should be at 100% sooner rather than later. Ellis Iandolo is back after his one match suspension after his sending off in the win over Forest Green Rovers.

Walsall who welcome Swindon Town in their final home game of the season is in mid table in the League two standings. Fifteenth position in the league table with fifty-four points from forty-five games see Mike Flynn side comfortably in mid-table.

Walsall run of form in the last seven games to end the season has been very inconsistent. Four defeats, two wins and one draw. The sole draw was the Walsall final away game of the season which was last weekend game away at Colchester United. The game ended in a 2-2 draw; the two wins have been at home. A 1-0 home win over Carlisle United on Easter Friday, eight days later was a 2-0 home win over promotion contenders Port Vale.

Three of the four defeats in the span of seven games came in a row. An away defeat at Salford at the end of March was followed by a 2-0 home defeat to Leyton Orient. A week later was the third defeat in a row which was a 1-0 away defeat at Rochdale, which came with crushing news that Conor Wilkinson tore his ACL and could be out for up to a year. The last defeat out of the last seven games was a 1-0 away defeat at Crawley Town on Easter Monday.
